Note

In 1764 Joseph Standen purchased farmland & property in Thakeham, Sullington, Storrington & West Chiltington ‎(130 acres)‎ from his landlord, John Mordaunt, for the sum of £700, an annuity of £30 p/a, board & lodging and the keep of his horse at all t imes for the sum of £15 p/a. John Mordaunt died in 1777 and left the remainder of his estate to Joseph & Mary. He is buried in Sullington Church yard at the foot of the graves of Joseph & Mary.
In 1779 Joseph Standen mortgaged his property for £1100 at 4% p/a for 1000 years. His will proved in 1780 provided the following legacies.
£200 to Edward, £200 to Susannah, £200 to Elizabeth & £20 to Joseph. John & James obtained the leases of some of the farms from their mother.
At Mary’s death in 1784 the farms were sold for £1450 and the Mortgage ‎(then £1254)‎ was paid off. The estate was then divided as follows:
£80 to John, £80 to James, £10 to Edward, £130 to Susannah, £130 to Elizabeth and £140 to others. James' and John's leases remained in force.James died 1786/6. John died in 1819 & was succeeded by his son John, b.28/10/1779, who then married Jane Downer, the beneficial owner of the farm. Jane died in 1846 and the property was sold.
Edward is said by his mother to have nothing of her estate, having had his portion when he went into business.
